A dark shadow moving around in the distant bushes…
This is how it started. At the time I didn’t realise what a rare sight this was. My trip to the Kruger National park was full of sightings, but of all, the rhino in the bushes must have been the biggest privilege, as the rhino population is verging on extinction.
This is because rhinos are poached for their horn, which is used as a symbol of wealth, and in traditional medicine in Asia, where it is touted as an aphrodisiac, which has been scientifically disproven. Although rhino horns grow back, poachers shoot to kill, but often only injure the rhino. They violently slash the horn from the living rhino, leaving them to succumb to their wounds. This leaves the offspring orphaned, mourning their parent(s).
This project tells the story of a baby rhino, living through this heart-breaking experience.
